For those of you who are familiar with the Netscape/Mozilla story, it is the same dual-licensing model that Sun Microsystems is using. While these improvements will always be made freely available, Sun Microsystems reserves the right to incorporate some or all these improvements to StarOffice which is still a closed-source project. was started as a community project (it just turned one year old) whereby the source code of certain parts of Staroffice were released to the public for volunteers to work on and improve upon them. However, please do not fret as will always be free and we are going to show you in this article how and why instead of MS Office and StarOffice is for you.
Staroffice used to be free as in you can freely download and install in as many computers as you like but Sun Microsystems has recently decided to charge for Staroffice. is the open source (or, free indefinitely) cousin of StarOffice. You may have heard of Sun Microsystems’ StarOffice which is being offered as a viable and cheaper alternative to Microsoft Office.
